How to Maintain Your Window Treatments

Custom window treatments are an investment that will last many years with proper maintenance. But you may find yourself wondering how exactly to perform that proper maintenance for your window treatments. The North Idaho Blinds, Shades & Shutters team shares some tips from Hunter Douglas on maintaining your window treatments.

Cleaning Window Treatments

Regularly cleaning your window treatments keeps them looking great and extends their lifespan. Cleaning methods will vary slightly depending on the material and style of your window treatments.

Wood Blinds & Shutters

Hardwood is susceptible to moisture damage, so you must keep it dry when cleaning your blinds and shutters. Wipe them weekly with a clean, dry cloth to remove dust and other debris. Use a high-quality wood oil or polish to preserve the natural shine of hardwood and prevent it from cracking.

Faux Wood & Vinyl Blinds & Shutters

Using a dry or damp soft cloth, you can remove dust and allergens from faux wood and vinyl window treatments. If your blinds or shutters have fingerprints or a grime buildup, you can use a solution of warm water and mild detergent to clean the slats. If you use soap and water to clean your blinds or shutters, always wipe the area with a clean, damp cloth afterward to prevent soapy residue and ensure that they dry completely.

Fabric Shades & Drapery

Use a feather duster or your vacuum’s upholstery attachment on low suction to gently clean fabric window treatments. You can spot-clean most fabrics with soap and warm water, but always test an inconspicuous area first. If your shades or drapes are machine washable, always use the gentle cycle and hang them to dry to prevent shrinking.

How Often Should You Clean Window Treatments?

How often you clean your window treatments depends on several factors, like if you have kids or pets or if anyone in your house has allergies or asthma. The rule of thumb is to dust or vacuum your window coverings every time you clean your home, whether once a week or a month. Give your shades and blinds a deep cleaning seasonally or twice per year.

Other Tips to Maintain Window Treatments

  • Use PowerView® Automation whenever possible. Motorization uses consistent force every time, so there’s no risk of damaging your shades or blinds by pulling too hard. Hands-free operation also lessens the chance of fingerprints and stains on your window treatments.
  • Add a liner to fabric shades and drapes, especially in south-facing rooms. Liners will help prevent fading and discoloration and give your home a polished appearance.
  • Avoid using delicate fabrics or floor-length drapery in high-traffic areas of your home. The busiest spaces in your home need window treatments that combine fashion with function.
